After searching for a topic and agreeing to supervise: If an institute agrees to supervise an agreed topic for a thesis, the first official step is for the supervising institute. This creates an examination for the candidate in the [Thesis] module in the campus system and enters the topic. The examiner and co-supervisor are also named.
General conditions: Each thesis must be supervised by two KIT examiners. One of them must be a professor. KIT examiners are all professors and private lecturers who work full-time at KIT. In addition, there are also KIT examiners, usually KIT employees at the ING institutes with a doctorate, who have been granted the right to examine by the Presidential Board. (In the case of a final project with a first examiner at the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics, the first examiner will usually also propose a co-examiner).
If the first examiner is from a KIT Faculty of Engineering, the co-examiner must be from the KIT Faculty of Business Administration and Economics. Exception: the ING-MACH institutes wbk and IFL. In the case of initial supervision by one of these two institutes, the co-supervisor can also be another ING examiner. These two institutes can also take on the co-supervisor role in the case of initial supervision by another ING institute.
Once an examiner combination as described above has been found, the work can be registered in the system (usually by the first supervising institute). No further, separate application is required even if the first supervision is by a KIT engineering examiner.
It is always the candidate's responsibility to ensure that the first examiner and co-examiner are appointed according to these criteria.
- The student will then receive an e-mail from the system with the request to submit the application within a specified deadline application for the final thesis. The procedure is the same as for other examinations. The registration is formally an attempt to register (or an application for admission). The system checks whether the admission requirements according to the applicable SPO and module handbook are met. module handbook are fulfilled.

If the authorisation requirements are not met, the system displays a corresponding error message.
from the system. However, in such a case, the SPO stipulates that the Examination Board can decide on admission to the thesis upon request.
admission to the thesis upon request. We offer the linked form for this purpose.
Important: Even if the authorisation requirements are not fulfilled, it is it is essential that before submitting the application the steps listed under point 2 in the system (creation of the examination by the examiner). The application attempt requested by the system by e-mail requested by the system must also have been made in good time.
After approval or authorisation (max. 14 days processing time), the application is made internally (max. 8 days processing time). The system informs the student by e-mail. (The information possibly still that the registration must be confirmed by the student is incorrect and will be corrected soon). will be corrected soon). The first examiner will be informed personally..
- If the admission requirements are met or if an application is approved in accordance with point 4, the student is shown the status ‘Applied for’. The examiner receives information from the system that the agreed award date (registration date) can now be entered. After entry and confirmation of publication by the examiner, the thesis is shown as ‘registered’ in the system.
- After processing, completion and submission of the thesis and documentation of this date in the system by the date in the system by the examining institute, an e-mail notification is sent to the student that the thesis is the thesis is ready for correction and assessment.
- The next information will be sent when the examiners have completed the correction and assessment finalised. With the note that the grades will then be published by the examination board.
- Die Note publication in the system (the grade is visible in the study programme plan) by the examination board completes the procedure. An automatic e-mail notification is also sent via the system. via the system.

Procedure for admission and registration of a thesis / processing time / submission
Special case: Recognition of a final thesis - No registration required
Theses that are completed abroad as part of a temporary study programme are formally submitted via the recognition of examination results procedure after prior consultation with a local KIT examiner (WiWi/ING). This means that there is no prior registration in the system. Important: Anyone who has completed or registered a thesis for another degree programme is not entitled to a new topic. In the KIT-WiWi degree programmes, the recognition of such theses is therefore generally excluded.
Processing time and completion of the work
As a general rule, the maximum time allowed to complete a final thesis in business and economics is 6 months, depending on the specifications in the SPO of the relevant degree programme..
The workload of a Master's thesis is based on the full 6-month processing time. According to the curriculum, this falls on the last semester of the degree programme. In reality, things tend to develop differently. However, students who plan to complete further work in addition to their thesis during the semester do so on their own responsibility. There is no justification for extending the processing time. This is different for Bachelor's theses. Here, the workload is designed for 3 months in exclusive processing. According to the curriculum, the Bachelor's thesis is a parallel achievement to other achievements in the semester. For this reason, the maximum processing time is also extended to 6 months. Beyond the standard period of study, however, it is permissible for an institute to shorten the processing time accordingly if no or little other work is completed in addition to the Bachelor's thesis.
Extension of the processing time/cancellation. Extension of the processing time/cancellation. In the course of working on a thesis, it can also happen that the thesis is not completed by the specified submission date. If the reasons for this are not attributable to the student, a justified Application to the Examination Board. It is submitted online, together with the uploaded written consent of the first examiner concerned (or a responsible member of staff acting expressly on behalf of the first examiner). The processing time for Master's theses can thus be extended by a maximum of 3 months and that for Bachelor's theses by a maximum of 1 month. If this time is not sufficient but there are valid reasons that are not the student's responsibility, a cancellation is possible. The decision is made by the examination board at the candidate's request. If the application is approved, this is an authorised withdrawal, as it can also be applied for in the course of the ongoing processing time. The performance is not counted. However, the same topic is no longer output for editing on the next attempt.
Unjustified cancellation shortly after registration. The WiWi examination regulations (for deadlines see there) stipulate that in the initial period after registration of the thesis, the topic can be returned without giving reasons. The application for cancellation must also be submitted to the examination board by the deadline. This option can only be used once, i.e. it does not apply from the next registration for the thesis.
Completion of the work or examination / scope of the examination performance
In most KIT-WiWi degree programmes, the SPO only requires a final thesis. Where this is the case, the examination is deemed to be completed when the thesis is duly submitted to the first examining institute. In this case, the submission date is the examination date. (What counts as proper submission beyond compliance with the respective SPO requirements is part of the detailed project discussion at the examining institute).
Presentation of the final thesis. However, a presentation of the work can also be part of the examination. Only the WiInf Bachelor examination regulations require this. In all other degree programmes, it is part of the project planning. There are institutes, especially in the ING faculties, which only supervise a thesis with the presentation component. Where this has been agreed, the presentation is usually a grade-relevant part of the examination. In most cases, the presentation is scheduled after submission of the thesis. In this case, the day of the Presentation, as the last part of the performance review, on the examination date of the final thesis. This point is particularly important if the examination is not to take place in a new semester.
‘At least passed’ booking. If the examination has been fully completed but the correction and grading process is still in progress, the examiner can enter the work in the system as ‘at least passed’ under its actual examination date if the performance has been pre-assessed accordingly. If this documents the completion of the degree programme in the system, the self-service function can be used to create a Certificate of title be generated. This has the same official value as the certificate. Together with the transcript of records, these documents provide the same information to third parties as the certificate and transcript (albeit without a grade for the final thesis).
Submission of the work: On the day of submission, the version of the thesis is handed in to which no further changes are made or which forms the basis for the assessment of the written part of the thesis. It contains the declaration in accordance with the requirements of the respective KIT-SPO on independence in the preparation of the thesis. The number of copies to be submitted must be clarified in advance with the first and co-supervisor.
Please note: From WS 2022/23 there will no longer be an extended examination period. This means that from this semester onwards, a course will be assigned to the semester in which it was completed or successfully completed. Even if this is on the first day of a semester. This also makes it necessary to re-register for this semester.
