The work placement
In every undergraduate degree program offered by the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics, a professional internship is a regular component of the coursework to be completed. The compulsory internship offers the opportunity to apply the skills acquired during your studies under realistic conditions and to specifically promote specialist and interdisciplinary skills such as project management.
There is great demand from the business world: in a high potential study from 2000, the management consultancy Kienbaum described work placements as "the most successful recruitment tool for German companies". The decisive factor here is the opportunity for both companies and students to get to know each other over a longer period of time in a non-binding manner.
As a rule, the offer of internships is linked to the student's level of education. For example, companies also offer internships to students who have completed their intermediate diploma or bachelor's degree, which include a high degree of responsibility in addition to the technical requirements.
Useful information on internships for students
Internships abroad
Internships abroad are also particularly interesting. In addition to the aspects mentioned above, they also offer the opportunity to acquire or develop foreign language and cultural skills.
There are also financial support programs for internships abroad. For more information, please contact the KIT International Student Office (Leonardo program).
Convention du stage
In some countries, e.g. in France, it is customary to conclude a contract between the intern, the internship position and the university (called "convention du stage" in France). However, KIT does not enter into contracts with companies in connection with internships.
With one exception: in cooperation with the responsible KIT legal department, a standardized KIT contract template has been created. There are 3 languages to choose from and in the selected form, the intern must pre-fill everything online as far as possible. To ensure smooth processing, please also note the following:
- At the end, after all other parties have countersigned, 3 original copies are submitted to the faculty's examination office (one to be kept, two for the other parties after processing).
- The contracts will only be countersigned by us if all requested data is available. This applies in particular to the declaration and the other information on the insurance cover. (To be submitted together with
- a declaration as to whether the internship is compulsory or voluntary,
- a current printout of the enrollment history
- stating the e-mail address.
Semester off for internships
There is no semester off for compulsory internships. The internship period is taken into account when determining the standard period of study.
However, after providing proof of the compulsory internship, a semester of leave can be applied for for a voluntary, study-related internship at the student service if the internship covers at least 50% of the lecture period. The responsible office of the faculty (WiWi Examination Office) certifies on the semester leave application to the Student Office that it is a study-related internship and forwards the certificate directly to the Student Office on request. Binding and specific information about the intended internship is required for the certificate (internship contract or a certificate from the company about the start and duration of the internship).
Experience has shown that it can take quite some time until the internship contract is available. If the application for a semester of leave is submitted to the Office of Student Affairs within the application deadline and the Office of Student Affairs is informed accordingly, the faculty certificate can still be submitted later. The Office of Student Affairs will inform you of the deadline for submitting documents when you submit your application.
