Note
Databases are a proven technology for managing large amounts of data. The oldest database model, the hierarchical model, was replaced by different models such as the relational or the object-oriented data model. The hierarchical model became particularly more important with the emergence of the extensible Markup Language XML. XML is a data format for structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data. In order to store XML documents consistently and reliably, databases or extensions of existing data base systems are required. Among other things, this lecture covers the data model of XML, concepts of XML query languages, aspects of storage of XML documents, and XML-oriented database systems.
Learning objectives:
Students
- know the basics of XML and generate XML documents,
- are able to use XML database systems and to formulate queries to XML documents,
- know to assess the use of XML in operational practice in different application contexts.
Workload:
- Lecture 30h
- Exercise 15h
- Preparation of lecture 24h
- Preparation of exercises 25h
- Exam preparation 40h
- Exam 1h
