Note
The management of a bank is in charge of the determination and implementation of business policy - taking into account all relevant endogenous and exogenous factors - that assures the bank's success in the long run. In this context, there exists a large body of banking models and theories which are helpful in describing the success and risk of a bank. This course is meant to be the bridging of banking theory and practical implementation. In the course of the lectures students will learn to take on the bank management's perspective.
The first chapter deals with the development of the banking sector. Making use of appropriate assumptions, a banking policy is developed in the second chapter. The design of bank services (ch. 3) and the adequate marketing plan (ch. 4) are then built on this framework. The operational business of banks must be guided by appropriate risk and earnings management (ch. 5 and 6), which are part of the overall (global) bank management (ch. 7). Chapter eight, at last, deals with the requirements and demands of bank supervision as they have significant impact on a bank's corporate policy.
Learning outcomes:
Students are are in a position to discuss the principles of commercial banking. They are familiar with fundamental concepts of bank management and are able to apply them.
