Application for a second repetition of an examination

Basics and consequences

In the degree programs of the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics, failed examinations can be repeated once. If a repeat examination (including any oral re-examination) is not passed, the examination is definitively failed. The right to take the examination is lost and admission to the degree program expires. The latter does not take effect immediately, but only at the end of the semester for which re-registration was still possible when the definitively failed examination was recorded. Important: If an examination has been definitively failed (key date: booking date in the system), it is not possible to re-register for the next semester. However, where this has already been done, it is valid.

Students who have lost their examination entitlement due to failing the repeat examination can submit a justified application to the Examination Board for a second resit (excluded for final theses and orientation examinations).

Application deadline, preparation and consultation. Students who decide to apply for a second retake of an examination should submit the application in accordance with the SPO within two months of the announcement of the grade. We recommend submitting the application as soon as possible, as registration for upcoming examinations in the first attempt and re-registration for the next semester usually depend on your decision. Everything you need to know about the application and the exact procedure is summarized on this information page. However, if you have any further questions or do not find an important aspect of your application situation mentioned, you can receive personal advice. This takes place during the usual consultation appointments at the Examinations Office, for which an appointment can be booked online. During the consultation, the contents of this page are assumed to be known.

Every application for a second retake is submitted to the examination board (or to the chairperson of the examination board between meetings). If the examination board approves the first application for a second resit, it is deemed to have been approved. If it is not approved, the application is submitted to the KIT Presidential Board for a decision. If an application for a second repetition is submitted repeatedly or if more than one application for a second repetition is submitted at the same time, the KIT Presidential Board will decide in each case.

Registration for further examinations Once the right to take an examination has been lost, no further examinations can be registered for via the system in the first attempt. (Repeat examinations are excluded from this block). This will only be possible again once an application for a second resit has been approved and the examination has been successfully completed. Until then, all further examinations can only be admitted and registered for via the WiWi Examinations Office. In this case, admission is subject to the proviso that the second retake is taken and passed. Only then will examinations admitted in this way be evaluated.

Applications for a second resit are usually processed and decided within 4 weeks at the latest. The processing time is extended accordingly if the KIT Presidential Board decides.

If the application processing overlaps with registration deadlines for planned examinations, it is advisable to contact the institutes concerned in good time (within the registration period). As a rule, the institutes will then register a conditional application.

Effect of the approval: The second resit is a further resit examination which, in the case of a failed written examination, includes another exam attempt and, if applicable, an oral resit examination. The examination entitlement is restored if the second repeat examination is taken and successfully completed by the deadline after the next deadline, calculated from the date of the failed written examination (not the oral re-examination!). If the examination approved for the second repeat is in a semester that is blocked for re-registration, the block on re-registration is lifted until this semester, unless the semester is beyond a set SPO deadline. In such a case, the deadline extension for this deadline must also be applied for and approved so that an approved second resit can be taken in the semester in question.

Procedure:

Before submitting your application, but only after reading the information on this page, you may make an appointment with the Examinations Office if there is a need for additional clarification. Make a note in the first paragraph of the application stating when the consultation took place.

(The appointment is not obligatory. If you do not wish to attend, it is sufficient to indicate in the first paragraph of the application that you do not require any further advice beyond the information on these pages.)

The application is submitted via the Examinations Office and then submitted to the Examination Board. Until further notice, we recommend submitting the application as a PDF attachment in an email to pruefungssekretariat∂wiwi.kit.edu. Subject line "eilt: Application for second repetition [P-title]". Please always use your own KIT account for this.

The application must be accompanied by a current transcript of records, on which the failed and registered examinations are also documented.

Form, structure and content of the application for a second repetition

The application must be submitted in letter form, not handwritten, with current sender details and KIT e-mail address. One page is sufficient; of course, more can be written, e.g. if aspects are to be taken into account that are not evident from the course of studies alone.

In the subject line of the application, the examination and the subject for which the second repetition is requested are named and it is mentioned at the beginning of the application whether a counseling interview was attended or not.

e.g.
Dear Sir or Madam
I am applying for a second retake for the above-mentioned examination. // The information on the faculty's website was sufficient for me, I did not attend a consultation. // I had a consultation at the faculty's examinations office on xxx. //

The application is divided into two sections. The first section deals with the examination applied for. For each examination attempt, a brief summary should be given of what led to the failure. One or two sentences are sufficient as a result of your own analysis. Of course, you can also write more.
The second section deals with the rest of your studies and other achievements. The overall performance is not insignificant for the decision on the application. Here, too, it is important to address the causes of any weaknesses that may become apparent in order to put them into perspective. However, in the end, only what can be proven in case of doubt can be taken into consideration (e.g. longer health impairments with a certificate). And not every aspect presented will be considered relevant by the examination board in every case, even if it can be proven. Therefore, the standard rule is: If you have supporting documents for the information provided in the application, please enclose a copy. If you have to go to a lot of trouble to obtain them, do not waste any time, submit the application without supporting documents first and wait to see if you receive feedback that a point presented can only be considered if supporting documents are submitted.

Don't forget to sign.

Application deadlines

The second resit application must be submitted no later than 2 months after failing the resit examination. The processing time for

  • First application: usually max. 4 weeks after submission of the application.
  • Follow-up application / first application with several examinations or negative opinion of the examination board: Usually significantly longer, as the application is submitted to the KIT Presidential Board for a decision after it has been reviewed by the Examination Board (contact person at the Presidential Board: silvia.muth∂kit.edu).

These processing times must be taken into account if admission to an examination depends on the approval of the second resit application.

Note on exam registration before the application is decided:

Depending on when the application is submitted, registration deadlines for scheduled examinations and the decision on the application may overlap. In such a case, we recommend that you inform the responsible staff at the examining institutes in good time (within the official registration period). The institutes usually accept conditional registration for the examination. Participation is then conditional, i.e. it is only possible if proof is submitted to the institute before the examination that the application has been approved and participation is therefore permitted. Tip: If the examination secretariat is informed of the respective contact persons at the institutes after conditional registration, the institute can be informed quickly of the possibility of participation.
