Seminar module: Crediting and booking
Seminars in the seminar module
As part of the seminar module, one seminar must be completed in the Bachelor's degree courses mentioned above and two seminars in the Master's degree courses. In the Bachelor's degree, the seminar module is part of the specialization course, which means that a seminar can be taken in the fourth semester at the earliest, after completion of the foundation course.
Examination law aspects
The study and examination regulations from 2015 onwards introduce a different type of examination (in contrast to written examinations or oral examinations). All performances that are assessed with a grade are considered examinations. Examinations are graded 5.0 if failed and can only be repeated once.
All seminars that are booked in the seminar module in the above-mentioned degree programs must always be graded and are therefore considered examinations of a different type. Students who fail an examination of a different type may repeat it once. The repetition of an examination of a different type may not be on the topic already worked on and can be proven by a curricular equivalent examination of a different type. For seminar achievements in the seminar module, this means that the repetition may take place in the same seminar, with a new topic, but also in any other seminar that is approved for the seminar module.
Failure to pass again is considered a "definitive failure" and the right to take the examination is lost. This can only be regained by applying to the examination board for a second retake.
Please note: For each seminar, there is a point in time specified by the seminar leader from which participation becomes binding in terms of examination law. Withdrawal is then only possible with valid, comprehensible reasons. If there are no comprehensible reasons for withdrawal or if these are not immediately presented to the seminar leader, a grade of 5.0 will be awarded. Regular attendance is also a performance criterion for the seminar. If a defined number of unattended seminar dates is exceeded, this can also lead to a grade of 5.0.
Required performance
The following achievements are generally required for the successful completion of a seminar:
- Active and regular participation in the seminar,
- Preparation of a seminar paper on one aspect of the seminar topic and
- presentation of the seminar paper on one of the seminar dates.
Formal regulations
As of SPO 2015, seminar achievements at the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics are generally entered directly into the system by the institute offering the seminar (applies within the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics).
- If the work is documented on a certificate of achievement, the following must be entered on it
- General thematic overview of the seminar according to the module handbook
- Specific title of the seminar course
- Title of the topic of the seminar paper
- Semester of the seminar course attended
- Seminar leader and examiner
- Seminar level (Bachelor's or Master's seminar)
- The performance certificate must always include an assessment with a grade that conforms to the SPO.
- In order for a seminar to be recorded in the seminar module, at least 3 CP/ECTS must be acquired and recorded. A seminar is credited with a maximum of 3 CP. The workload for a seminar is approx. 90 hours (2 SWS).
Which seminars are permitted in the seminar module?
Wiwi seminars: In principle, all seminars offered at the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics (unless explicitly stated otherwise in the module handbook, e.g. EnTechnon seminars), as well as all ZAR seminars, can be counted as seminars in the seminar module. However, it may be that some seminars are only permissible for the Bachelor's degree or only for the Master's degree. A corresponding note should be included in the seminar announcement. In the module handbook of the degree program for the seminar module, the permissible seminars are listed with the examiner and the subject headings under which the seminar achievements are documented in the certificate.
Overview of the seminars offered at the faculty
The faculty's seminars are announced centrally on this page:

Registration and recognition
Registration for seminars is not yet possible via online registration. Registration is made directly with the seminar leader. However, the appropriate seminar placeholder should already be activated in the study plan to enable later registration and booking of the course. The seminar grade is entered into the system directly by the institute offering the seminar.
Seminar performance at another faculty of the KIT
ING seminars: In principle, seminars from a KIT engineering faculty are also permitted in the seminar module of the above-mentioned Bachelor's degree programs. In the Master's degree programs, a maximum of one seminar from an ING faculty can be included in the seminar module. The external seminars submitted must meet all formal criteria of the WiWi standards.
All external seminars must comply with the regulations for seminars in the seminar module.
Seminars at an engineering faculty of KIT must also be applied for and approved by the examination board of the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics. The form serves both as an application and as a certificate for the work performed.
Procedure: Complete the relevant form in the WiWi portal and then send it off. After processing by the Examinations Office (max. 3 weeks in the standard procedure), you will receive an e-mail notification for collection.
The following conditions must be met for approval:
- Only courses that are explicitly certified as a "seminar" are permitted as compulsory seminars in the seminar module. The standards for seminars at the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics must be met and documented in the transcript of records:
- Course of at least 2 SWS
- Regular attendance of the seminar dates
- Preparation of a seminar paper with an appropriate amount of time on one aspect of the seminar topic
- Presentation of the seminar paper at a seminar date
- The seminar performance must be assessed with a PO-compliant grade
- Relevant content-related reference to the selected engineering module in the Master's degree or to the selected engineering specialization or compulsory elective module in the Bachelor's degree (with the exception of the module "Specialization in Engineering Fundamentals"). This is the case if the seminar is taken at the same institute that offers the ING module taken. Otherwise, a statement from the ING module coordinator is required stating that the seminar matches the ING module taken. (Irrelevant: The reference to an engineering Bachelor's module for an ING Master's seminar applied for)
Excluded from this approval requirement are
- Seminars of the wbk
- Seminars of the IFL
- ING seminar: "We make a patent" (Prof. Stork, ITIV)
The same applies here: All seminar performances must be graded if they are claimed for the seminar module.
MATH seminar in the Bachelor's degree: In the Bachelor's degree programs, a seminar from the Faculty of Mathematics can also be taken. The seminar is specifically designated for Bachelor Industrial Engineering / Industrial Management.
